Six Tahoe Comfort Food Staples To Try This Fall

Blog Home / Insights

This past week, Autumn came to Tahoe in dramatic fashion. As snow graced mountain peaks, teeth began to chatter, and smoke erupted from chimneys all in the blink of an eye. While most locals are scurrying to pull their winter wardrobes out of storage, we had food on the brain! Preferably a cozy, family-style atmosphere where diners come not only to warm their bellies but their souls…

Without further ado, here are our picks for the most satisfying comfort food dishes around the lake.

Austin’s Chicken Fried Chicken | Incline Village, NV

Is there any dish more synonymous with comfort food than a perfectly crispy fried chicken? Served with heaping mashed potatoes and sinfully delicious mini cornbread muffins, Austin’s does this staple justice. The chicken breast is served over Austin’s light and savory house gravy which keeps guests coming back! Austin’s also serves burgers, steaks, and other tasty fare.

Old Range Steakhouse’s Gnocchi | Tahoe Vista, CA

Old Range Steakhouse is known for its incredible cuts of steak (duh), but this rustic upscale eatery has a cult dish which has all the qualities of classic comfort food: the Gnocchi.

Old Range does not skimp on portions and you’re guaranteed a steakhouse-worthy helping of the pillowy pasta. Served on an old-fashioned tin plate, this sauce-smothered dish practically dares you not to finish it entirely. Old Range’s appetizers also come highly recommended, although you may want to save room!

Ten Crows BBQ’s Brisket | South Lake Tahoe, CA

Ten Crows’ famous brisket was a shoo-in for our comfort food list. Simple ingredients and slow, careful preparation are the key to this delectable dish’s success. Classic Southern-style sides such as collard greens and slaw balance out this hearty chunk of beef. Other popular choices include sandwiches, tri-tip, and the Brunswick Stew. Be sure to arrive hungry for this one!

Old Post Office’s Hangover Helper | Carnelian Bay, CA

In our world, comfort food and breakfast are a natural fit. The Old Post Office serves traditional breakfast stand-bys from their gorgeous Tahoe City location. For our purposes, we recommend the Hangover Helper. No need for prior intoxication to enjoy this dish, simply a desire for buttery, flaky biscuits, house-made gravy, and the best sausage patty ever! Top this dish off with some mouth-watering homemade potatoes and you’ve got yourself some comfort food!

Pfeifer House’s Hungarian Beef Goulash | Tahoe City, CA

If you weren’t lucky enough to have parents or grandparents make you goulash on a cold winter’s day, do yourself a favor and head over to Pfeifer’s for a taste of what you’ve been missing. It is self-explanatory why rich, flavorful beef stew paired with ribbons of fresh egg noodles is great comfort food! Pfeifer’s distinct German décor completes the experience solidifying its place as a must-try dining experience around the lake.

Bite’s Gumbo | Incline Village, NV

Bite’s tapas style dining (although delicious) wouldn’t typically be associated with comfort food. However, one standout dish falls squarely into this category: the Gumbo. Bite’s Gumbo is favorite among locals and visitors alike.  Despite Bite being known for its inventive and ever-changing menu, the Gumbo has managed to hang on, a testament to its tastiness!
