It’s no secret that we love discovering new local eateries here at Oliver Luxury. This week, we’ve partnered with Amanda Burden of edible Reno-Tahoe, a food blog and magazine featuring the gamut of local cuisine, to uncover some of Reno’s hidden gems. Without further ado, here is Amanda’s choice of favorite local restaurants and watering holes!
Reno is quickly becoming a food and drinks hot spot, with quite a few local restaurant and bar owners offering delicious selections and stylish atmospheres that rival anything found in large metropolitan cities. Pignic Pub & Patio is a lively restaurant near Downtown Reno with an offbeat meal concept: bring your own meat. Or you can buy a few steaks from the restaurant’s fridge and the staff will give you the grill and tools to whip up your own dinner. The dishes and cleanup is on them. Time it right and you can enjoy a pop-up dinner with a local chef or a tasting night complete with live music or games on the TV. Cocktails are raised to an art form here. And upstairs you’ll find the Revision Brewery occupying a sweet space of its own. It’s so fun and different that Pignic was featured on The Zimmern List on the Travel Channel with national food celebrity Andrew Zimmern here.
From the owners of Pignic comes this great pizza joint where you’ll find New York-style, artisan, brick-oven-fired pizzas crafted from an eighth-generation Sicilian dough recipe. Try the award-winning wings and meatballs and sip a delicious craft cocktail or local beer at this local’s favorite with two locations, Downtown and Midtown, and a third to come at The Summit shopping mall by the end of the year. It will be featured on a nationally syndicated food TV show by the end of the year.

The locavore scene in Reno is widely prevalent in the restaurants owned by Gino Scala, known as Gino The Soup Man. With several locations (including an express location at the University of Nevada, Reno), his popular Great Full Gardens serves up farm-fresh ingredients, great service and a community atmosphere. The lunch menu features Gino’s Totally Tomato soup, Paleo Lunch Bowl with grilled chicken or wild salmon, Beautiful BLTA with Applewood smoked bacon on toasted naan, Wild Cod Tacos with Mexican rice, and the vegan “Neatball” Sandwich with house-made marinara. Pair your meal with a non-alcoholic kombucha from Incline Village-based FOLK Brewing Company.
Texas comes to Reno with this family-run restaurant on Center Street. Brothers specializes in Texas-style, dry-rubbed and wood-smoked barbecue using two generations of family recipes. Try the classic Pulled Pork Sandwich or the Texas Tornado with Spicy Sausage topped with Beef Brisket.
Run by two Tahoe guys, Full Belly Deli’s employees bake the bread in house and top it with locally sourced vegetables and meats. You’ll find subs, wraps, soup, salads, and pressed sandwiches. The Green Eggs and Ham breakfast sandwich has fresh pesto and the Dirka Dirka bursts with corned beef, pastrami, pickles and jalapeño coleslaw. After establishing the first location in Truckee, the duo opened a Reno location. And a second Reno spot is coming soon. It will be featured on a nationally syndicated food TV show by the end of the year.
People from the Basque region of Europe originally came to Northern Nevada to work in the mines, but found sheepherding more lucrative. Basque food soon followed and Reno residents savor the flavors of the nearly 50-year-old Louis’ Basque Corner. This exceptional restaurant and bar serves entrées family style with soup, Basque beans, salad, French fries and dessert. Traditional dishes include oxtail, tongue, rabbit, lamb chops, and luscious sweetbreads with red wine and mushroom sauce. In the bar of this Reno staple you can rub elbows with the city’s bigwigs, cowboys, truck drivers, and hipsters over glasses of Louis’ famous Picon Punch or Rioja Blanco.
With two locations in Reno it’s easy to find a seat for one of the colossal omelettes at Squeeze In. This small chain was featured on Throwdown with Bobby Flay. The Hangover Helper with ham, bacon, sausage, and two cheeses, and the Holy Crab! King Crab omelette are signature dishes. If you are in Truckee, you’re in luck. The original Squeeze In is located there.
Find fine, award-winning chocolates at Dorinda’s, which uses French and organic chocolate that does not contain wax or other additives. The handmade sea salt caramel is addictively delicious.
This new spot offers baked goods that may just rival their counterparts in France. The display case is full of flaky croissants (plain, chocolate, almond, and more), crunchy baguettes, Danishes, banana bread, and other specialties. Perenn was so popular when it first opened that the small bakery would run out of all of their goods within a couple of hours.
It’s all about the ingredients at Batch. Here you’ll find cupcakes made with organic, gluten-free, paleo, and vegan ingredients. They cater to any preference or food allergy.
Choose from beautifully decorated sugar cookies, flaky-crust pies, and delicious cupcakes, all handmade with love.
If you’re hankering for an exceptional cocktail head over to this beautiful, year-old bar. Rum reigns so try RSL’s exquisite daiquiri or another tropical concoction. However, the barkeeps carry a fine selection of other spirits and beer as well.

If you are a tea drinker, Too Soul Tea serves loose-leaf teas in a cute, orange house near Downtown Reno. The choices range from earthy Yerba Mate Chai and hearty Vanilla Rooibos to mystical Blue Lady Black tea. Too Soul also features Coconut and Butter Rum Hot Chocolate, smoothies and bubble teas.
