Kings Beach Commercial Core Improvement Project – The $50 million revitalization project to improve Kings Beach has caused many traffic headaches over the past three years. Soon that hassle will be no more, as the construction is scheduled to be completed by November 2016. The Kings Beach Commercial Core Improvement Project aims to make the area more pedestrian friendly, welcoming for locals and tourists alike, while also improving the stormwater system.
The specific improvements include:
- Reducing Highway 28 from four lanes to two with a center-turn lane
- Improving crosswalks
- Adding sidewalks to increase safety
- New streetlights, bus shelters, trash receptacles, and benches
- Adding bike lanes and racks to encourage other modes of transportation
The North Tahoe Business Association was a significant help in directing businesses on how to successfully manage their business while the construction was going on. They created an “Open for Business” marketing campaign that provided businesses with signage and the know how to stay afloat while the work was being done. Now that the work is almost done businesses are reporting higher levels of foot traffic. As Executive Director of the North Tahoe Business Association, Joy M. Doyle exclaimed to Tahoe In Depth newspaper, “If you’ve never been, or haven’t been in a while, now is the time to check out the new and improved Kings Beach.”
